John Wissman
John E. Wissman, 81, 29 S. Herman St., New Bremen, died at 3:45 p.m. Oct. 8, 2007, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys.
He was born April 8, 1926, in New Bremen, to Irvin and Clara Neuman Wissman. On Aug. 6, 1950, he married Edith Blanke, who survives.
Other survivors are two daughters, Chris (William) Poeppelman and Cindy (Jerry) Newman, all of New Bremen; a sister-in-law, Helen, New Bremen; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a brother, Richard; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Richard Stewart; and a granddaughter.
He retired from Stamco, formerly of New Bremen, in May 1988 and owned and operated the former Wissman Sheet Metal business in New Bremen. He also was a semi-pro baseball player in the former Western Ohio Baseball League. He was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ, New Bremen, served on the church council and the stewardship board and was a member of the church's former men's group. A U.S. Marines veteran of World War II, he was a member of American Legion Post 241, New Bremen, the New Bremen Historic Association, the Friends of the Library, and a retired honorary member of the New Bremen-German Township Fire Department.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, the Rev. Leah Matthews officiating. Burial is at German Protestant Cemetery, New Bremen.
Calling is 3-8 p.m. Wednesday at Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home, New Bremen, and after 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.
