By Margie Wuebker mwuebker@dailystandard.com A Coldwater man has been indicted on a charge of assaulting a Celina police officer at the scene of a disturbance.
Cory Gross, 22, Northview Mobile Home Court, 105 First Ave., allegedly kicked Sgt. Tom Wale and then used a knee to strike the officer in the chest. The third-degree felony charge stems from a Sept. 11 incident at Williamsburg Square Apartments, 1400 W. Market St. Four police officers, including Wale, responded to the complex on reports of an altercation. Gross beat on the front door of an apartment until the frame broke and then attempted to hit the male resident inside, according to police reports. Patrolman Steve Yoder arrested Gross, who was then placed in the back of Wale's cruiser. The prisoner reportedly began screaming and kicking the windows as well as a Plexiglass divider separating the front and back seats. Wale was struck as he tried to get Gross to settle down. The officer completed transport to the Mercer County Jail after applying a hobble device to the prisoner's legs, Gross remains incarcerated on a $50,000 bond which Mercer County Assistant Prosecutor Matt Fox requested in light of the serious allegation. An arraignment is set for 9 a.m. Thursday. If convicted, the Coldwater man faces the possibility of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. |
