By Janie Southard jsouthard@dailystandard.com Two local men were pronounced dead Sunday evening at the scene of a two-vehicle, head-on crash near Willshire, where one driver fled the scene.
Will P. Wolfe, 26, 556 state Route 707, Rockford, and Brian E. Schug, 26, 171 Winkler Road, Willshire, both fatally injured, were transported to Van Wert County Hospital. The deceased were passengers in a 1993 Buick owned and operated by Rachel Wolfe, 22, Rockford, who was transported by LifeFlight to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind. Wolfe was listed in serious condition this morning. The driver of the other vehicle, Carey L. Hamrick, 41, Willshire, fled the scene on foot and later turned himself into the Van Wert County Sheriff's Office, according to the sheriff's reported. He submitted to drug and alcohol blood tests. Results of those tests were unknown at press time today, a sheriff's office spokesman said this morning. According to the traffic report from the sheriff's office, Hamrick's truck was southbound on state Route 49 in Van Wert County around 6 p.m. Sunday, near Township Road 18202, with the Wolfe vehicle approaching northbound on state Route 49. Hamrick's truck went left of center hitting the Wolfe car head-on, according to the report. Hamrick's 2001 Ford F-150 rolled over onto its top, and the Wolfe vehicle went off the road to the west. Both vehicles sustained severe damage, the report said. Hamrick exited his vehicle and left the scene on foot, even though he sustained possible injuries, the sheriff's report states. He later turned himself in at the sheriff's department. No charges had been filed and no other information was available as of press time today. |
