Bug killer in action | ||||||||
| ||||||||
A helicopter pilot from Brownsville, Ind., sprays a soybean field for aphids near Township Line Road and Frahm Pike on Thursday in Mercer County. The owner of the field, Rick Schleucher, said the cost of the chemical application, he figures, is less than the crop loss that occurs when farm vehicles track through the field to spray. Soybean aphids suck the juices from the plants and in high numbers can cause yield losses. Agriculture officials are encouraging farmers to scout their soybean fields on a regular basis for aphids. Ron Hammond, a research entomologist at Ohio State University, recently recommended producers spray for aphids if they find more than 250 insects per plant.
