08-04-05 Bremen grocery to close

Officials at Community Market in New Bremen have informed employees the grocery will close later this month due to low profits. The store employs about 30 people.

Messages left at the corporate office in Findlay were not returned by press time today.
The market opened in February taking over the building in Amsterdam Center formerly occupied by Big Bear, which closed in November 2003.
One nearby merchant, who also has heard the news from several market employees, said that although the new store is professionally run and a good place to shop, during the 15 months the village went without a food market shoppers developed new grocery-shopping habits.
"The shoppers now know where everything is at the other markets, and it's just not been enough time for them to come back to Bremen," the merchant said. "I think it's sad."  Officials of Fresh Encounter. Inc. of Findlay announced the opening of its Community Market store in New Bremen in November 2004. A company spokesman said at that time Fresh Encounter is Ohio's largest independent grocer with 33 stores in Ohio and Indiana.
The company operates markets under a variety of names: Great Scot, Fulmer, Sack 'N Save, Grocery Outlet, Bob & Carl's and Ev's World.
The closest Community Market stores are in Wapakoneta and Cridersville.
