08-22-05 Cause of man’s death undetermined

An 81-year-old Wapakoneta man was found dead in one of his farm fields early Friday morning.

Billy A. Green of 16724 state Route 65 reportedly was found trapped in a hay bind, a piece of equipment used to cut and row hay.
The Auglaize County Sheriff's office was requested to do a welfare check on Green about 4:05 a.m. when a newspaper deliverer noticed his papers were piling up in the mailbox.
"Deputies were out there and searched the home but didn't find him," said Auglaize County Assistant Coroner Steve Stienecker, who assisted at the scene with Coroner Dr. Thomas Freytag.
Stienecker said deputies decided to continue the search at daylight. A neighbor discovered the body in a field about 7 a.m.  Green was last seen on Tuesday and deputies have not determined how long he was actually trapped inside the hay bind and/or deceased. Stienecker said deputies do not believe the machinery was operating when the accident occurred.
There were no injuries visible; an autopsy is being performed to determine the exact cause of death, Stienecker added.
"Right now, we believe he slipped and got caught up in it," he said.
