Hold the mayo | ||||||||
| ||||||||
A damaged semitrailer filled with jars of mayonnaise awaits unloading in a cornfield along U.S. 33 between Jordan and Hill roads. Driver Gary Hignite, 56, of Knox, Ind., told Mercer County Sheriff's deputies he was driving eastbound when a deer darted into his path at 5:39 a.m. Oct. 7. The rig, owned by Freight Exchange of North America in Chicago, drove off the right side of the pavement, struck a creek bank and came to rest in the field. Hignite was taken by ambulance to Van Wert County Hospital, where he was treated then released. Workers hoped to salvage undamaged pallets still wrapped in protective plastic and dispose of the rest.
