| Firefighters exit a home along state Route 118 near Rockford that was damaged by fire Friday morning. The tenants, a family of five, escaped injury after a Christmas tree in a downstairs bedroom reportedly caught fire. Tony Elliott, his wife and three children made it to safety before more than a dozen firefighters from Rockford and Mendon arrived just after 10 a.m. Firefighters were greeted by flames coming from the bedroom area of the two-story wood home at 11189 state Route 118. The home sustained minor fire damage and extensive smoke damage throughout, said Rockford Fire Chief Ralph Rhoades, who did not immediately have a damage estimate. The property is owned by Thelma W. Hawk of Rockford. Firefighters were on the scene for about one hour. | |
