By Margie Wuebker mwuebker@dailystandard.com Hot shavings from a metal saw apparently touched off a fire Monday morning at the former Mersman Furniture building at 500 W. Wayne St.
Smoke and fire damage was contained in one area of the building, said Celina Fire Chief Doug Kuhn, who described the damage as light. Celina firefighters responded to the scene at 10:09 a.m. after salvage workers in the process of removing metal framework on the third floor noticed flames, which they tried to extinguish. Fire Chief Doug Kuhn said hot spots remained but no flames were showing when two trucks and five firefighters arrived. In addition to dealing with those areas at the south end of the building, they also assisted in ventilating the third floor during three hours at the scene. Kuhn believes hot shavings from a metal saw ignited combustible material as the men worked. Fire alarms alerted employees of Sources Community Network Services who quickly evacuated the building. Kuhn explained their offices are on the opposite end of the structure. The building is owned by Brickyard Investments. |
