Members of the Boone County Fire Protection District work to put out a fire inside the trunk of the Missouri state champion bur oak after a lightning strike Friday, Oct. 23, 2020, south of Columbia, Mo. According to the National Park Service, the bur oak tree is estimated to be between 350 and 400 years old and is called a 'witness tree,' meaning it was present when Lewis & Clark went upriver on the Missouri River.
