07-28-03: $6,450 raised at auction |
Ten commemorative Mercer County bells brought more than $6,000
during an auction held Saturday afternoon to benefit the Mercer County Bicentennial Com-
mittee.
Nine of the bells will remain here in Mercer County, while one is bound
for the home of an Indiana bell enthusiast.
Celina mayoral candidate Sharon LaRue purchased the first bell for
$1,450. Auctioneer Owen Hall fielded bids at a steady clip, reminding the audience the
special bells bearing the Mercer County name and casting date on the Ohio-shaped handles
were collectors' items that would appreciate in value.
Other purchasers of bells numbered two through 10 and their successful
bids were: Celina Aluminum Precision Technologies, $550; Maurer Hardware of Mendon, $450;
the Mercer County Commissioners, $450; Wally McDougall, $525; the Celina law firm of
Purdy, Lammers and Schiavone, $500; Bob Laughlin, $600; Wade Prentice, $750; the Celina
Rotary Club, $675; and Dave McNeilan, $925. The auction netted a total of $6,450.
Prentice and his wife, Pauline, came from Fort Wayne each day to watch
the bell casting process from passing of the ingots to dedication of the finished product.
"We didn't know about the auction," he said. "It was a
very nice surprise for someone who collects bells."
The new acquisition joins more than 3,500 other bells on display at the
Prentice home. |
