Firefighters from the Montezuma Community and St. Marys Township fire departments battle a smoky fire Monday afternoon at Behm’s Landing, southeast of Celina. Restaurant proprietor Laury Grimm called 911 at 1:37 p.m. after diners reported seeing heavy smoke. Flames were visible when firefighters arrived on the scene and the blaze was brought under control within 11 minutes, according to Montezuma Fire Chief Roger Davenport. The structure, owned by Cincinnati-area residents Dick and Pat Ward, sustained extensive heat and smoke damage. However, firefighters saved a 2003 pontoon and motor parked in the attached garage. A representative of the Ohio Fire Marshal’s Office toured the cottage late Monday, but the cause remains undetermined. The Wards, who frequent the area April through October, are scheduled to talk with local fire officials today. Davenport did not have a damage estimate. The owners reportedly have insurance to cover the loss.
