By Margie Wuebker mwuebker@dailystandard.com A Mercer County Sheriff's deputy received minor injuries in a struggle with a teenager intent on walking down the middle of a busy highway.
The incident occurred around 8 p.m. Thursday near Foundations Behavioral Health Services, 4761 state Route 29, Celina. Deputy Jay Wehrkamp responded to Foundations a short time before the incident on reports of an unruly 16-year-old girl. She allegedly kicked and damaged a metal trash can before leaving the building and walking along the east side of the highway. Wehrkamp asked the girl to stop and return to the building. She refused and walked into the middle of the road toward oncoming traffic. A struggle ensued when he attempted to physically remove her from the highway before an accident occurred. He finally managed to remove her from the road and called for assistance as she continued to struggle. Both the deputy and the girl received scrapes before she was handcuffed and later transported to the West Central Ohio Juvenile Detention Center in Troy. The case has been referred to the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office for review and possible charges. |
