By From staff reports newsroom@dailystandard.com This time, it only took seven innings to get the game in, and there was no close ball four calls to score the winning run with the bases loaded.
Celina's Melanie Heyne and Elida's Jeanne Hilvers dueled again. And, like the first meeting in the tournament, Hilvers was just one better than Heyne. Hilvers struck out 11 and scored the only run of the game in the top of the first inning as Elida posted a 1-0 win over Celina in Western Buckeye League action at Bill Feth Diamond in Celina. The Bulldogs end the WBL season at 4-5 and go to 12-9 overall. Hilvers scored the only run on a triple with one out in the top of the first. Samantha Conrad, who took ball four to drive in the winning run in Monday's 1-0 win at the Division II Bath Sectional, got the game-winning RBI again on a sacrifice fly to right to score Hilvers easily. But after that, Heyne was tough. The Celina junior allowed four hits, but walked none and struck out eight along the way to get the hard-luck loss. Hilvers, meanwhile, did not walk a batter and scattered three hits along the way. Celina had the chance to tie the game in the bottom of the inning as Allison Hoying singled and moved all the way to third with just one out. Hilvers shut the door, though, by striking out Shay Adams and Julia Siefring to end the inning. The last chance Celina had to score came in the bottom of the sixth when Siefring tripled with two outs, but Allison Braun popped up to second base to end the threat. Celina will travel to Cedarville College today to play in a three-team contest with Greenville and Kenton Ridge.
