By From staff reports newsroom@dailystandard.com The Mariners swept the Saturday doubleheader over the Copperheads with scores of 3-2 and 6-3. In the Sunday get-away game, the Copperheads avoided the sweep with a 3-2 win.
The two wins keep Grand Lake (17-20) ahead of Southern Ohio (14-22) for the sixth and final postseason position for the upcoming Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League playoffs from Aug. 2-6. In Saturday's first game, Grand Lake scored three times in the top of the seventh to get the comeback win. Ben Gaal started the rally by walking and Josh Dietz doubled home Gaal to cut the deficit to one. Ben Humphrey singled home Dietz to tie the game and moved to second on the throw home. After Kurt Laucher recorded an out, Kris Moorman lofted a fly deep enough in leftfield to score Humphrey for the game-winner. Dan Remenowsky allowed just a walk in the bottom of the inning before the Mariners ended the game with a double play. In the second game, Gaal homered and Wayne Bond, Josh Hula and Bryant Witt each had two hits to pace the Mariners. Brian Rumple scattered seven hits and walked none to get the complete-game win, striking out three along the way. The Mariners blew the game open in the second with four runs in the inning, thanks in large part to two Copperhead errors. In Sunday's game, the Copperheads scored two runs in the third to break a 1-all tie. T.J. Sheridan allowed just five hits over five innings to suffer the loss. Humphrey went 3-for-4 in the game while Michael Ayala and Dusty Hammond each added two hits. Grand Lake wraps up the home portion of the season on Tuesday as Indianapolis comes to Jim Hoess Field for a 7:15 p.m. first pitch. |
