Maurice Bauer

Maurice "Mike" Bauer, 90, Mendon, died at 8:45 a.m. May 2, 2006, at Van Wert County Hospital, where he had been a patient several few weeks.
   He was born March 14, 1916, in Auglaize County, to Henry and Sara Bowersock Bauer. On Nov. 10, 1940, he married Violet L. Wilkins, who survives.
   Also surviving are two sons, Harold (Monna Lu), Lexington, Ky., and Gerald (Kathleen), Celina; two daughters, Loretta (Jerry) Stanley, Rockford, and LaDonna (John) Williams, Springfield; a sister, Lois Wolford, Bellefontaine; seven grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 17 stepgreat-grandchildren and four stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
   Deceased are a brother, Carl; and two sisters, Edna Bristol and Mary Core.
   A farmer, he also was retired from National Seal Company, Van Wert, after 26 years service. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
   Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home, Spencerville, the Rev. Ronald L. Shifley officiating. Burial will follow in Spencerville Cemetery.
   Calling is 5-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.


Larry Brussell

Larry E. Brussell, 55, 70 S. Cleveland St., Minster, died at 7:30 p.m. April 20, 2006, in Venice, La., following a single-vehicle automobile accident.
   He was born Nov. 27, 1950, in Celina, to James and Florence Arnold Brussell. His father survives.
   Also surviving are two sons, Larry, Minster, and Donald, Jacksonville, Fla.; and two brothers, Jim (Rose Mary), Fort Loramie, and David (Darlene), Minster.
   Deceased is a brother, Jerry.
   A laborer electrician, he was volunteering in New Orleans with the Katrina Hurricane relief effort at the time of the accident.
   Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Hogenkamp Funeral Home, Minster, the Rev. Greg Ewing officiating.
   Calling is after 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.


Stanley Samples

Stanley Samples, 101, Rockford, died at 1:55 a.m. May 2, 2006, at The Laurels of Shane Hill, Rockford, where he had been a patient.
   He was born July 25, 1904, in Adams County, Ind., to Charles and Minnie Swank Samples. On Nov. 17, 1937, he married Marie Kettering, who died on Jan. 28, 2002.
   Surviving is a son, Richard (Sondra), Rockford; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
   Deceased is a brother, Ervin.
   He was a lifelong farmer in Blackcreek Township. He was a member of the Chattanooga Methodist Church and a past member of the Mercer County Farm Bureau.
   Services are 1 p.m. Friday at Ketcham-Ripley Funeral Home, Rockford, the Rev. Steven Oliver officiating. Burial will follow at Willshire Cemetery.
   Calling is after 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
   Contributions can be made to the church.


Eugene Smith

Former Celina resident Eugene Edward Smith, 78, Geneva, Ala., died at 11:28 p.m. April 28, 2006, at Wiregrass Medical Center, Geneva.
   He was born May 22, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., to Edward and Frona L. Smith O'Daniels. On April 19, 1948, he married Betty M. Mottinger, who died Nov. 10, 1987.
   Surviving are a son, Jeffrey A., Jonesboro, Ind.; four daughters, Lillian (Samuel) Swinson, Van Wert, Susan (Calvin) Jenkins, Celina, Martha (Finley) Smith, Decatur, Ind., and Rebecca Hart, San Diego, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
   He was retired from New Idea, Coldwater. He served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
   Service is 2 p.m. Sunday at W. H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home, Celina. Burial will follow at Buck Cemetery, Celina.
   Calling is after 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
