Joan Burke Joan M. Burke, 86, 121 N. Wayne St., St. Marys, died at 3:10 p.m. May 23, 2006, at her residence following an extended illness. She was born July 5, 1919, in St. Marys, to Vincent and Cornelius Snyder Pfenning. On Sept. 3, 1956, she married Robert Burke, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Joe (Amy) and Dan (Lori); a daughter, Robbie; a brother, Phil (Mary Jo) Pfenning; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Pfenning, all of St. Marys; and six grandchildren. Deceased is a brother, Paul Pfenning. She was a homemaker and had worked as a secretary in the purchasing department at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, St. Marys. She was a 1937 graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School and an accomplished ballerina. She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and its Altar Rosary Sodality, Mothers' Study Club and Joint Township District Memorial Hospital Guild, all of St. Marys. Funeral Mass is 11 a.m. Friday at the church, the Rev. Anthony E. Cutcher officiating. Burial is at Gethsemane Cemetery, St. Marys. No calling is planned. Contributions can be made to the Rev. Former Mercer resident James E. Thomas, 71, 6797 Silver Lakes Drive, Celina, died at his home May 23, 2006. He was born Dec. 24, 1934, in Columbus, to Cy and Gladys Collins Thomas. His parents and stepmother, Geraldine Martin Thomas are deceased. On Feb. 14, 1971, he married Barbara Thomas who died Jan. 28, 1999. Surviving are four sons, James A. (Kathy) and Michael, all of Accokeek, Md., Patrick (Debbie), Stewart, and Jon P. (Becky), Wadsworth; five daughters, Pamela S. (James) Carr, Tina J. (Roy) Lickteig, Mary E. (Matt) Fortkamp, and Deliha J., all of Celina, and Becky (Paul) McMahan, Elkhart, Ind.; two sisters, Mabel, Celina, and Ginny Drinnen, Wapakoneta; two stepbrothers, Bob (Patty) Bullock, Lima, and Don Bullock, Celina; 38 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Deceased are three daughters, Geraldine and Roxanne, and Michalea Thomas Berry; two brothers, John and Joe; and four sisters, Mary Whitaker, Marge Chaney, Peg Chaney and Geraldine McMurray. He retired from Huffy Bicycle Co. after 31 years of service, and was a former jockey and a boxer. He recently worked as a driver for the Amish community. He was a former member of the CB Club #54 Emergency REACT Group, the United Steel Workers Local #5369 and Ducks Unlimited. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home, Celina, the Rev. Randy Christian officiating. Calling is 5-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
