Jerome Gerstner

Jerome J. Jerry Gerstner, 59, of Uniopolis, died at 10:55 a.m. July 24, 2006, at Lima Memorial Health System. Death due to natural causes.
   He was born Nov. 6, 1946, in Lima, to Ferd and Lucille Hemmert Gerstner. On May 4, 1968, he married Judy M. Gierhart, who survives.
   Also surviving are two daughters, Julie (Greg) Billing, West Milton, and Lisa Gerstner, Uniopolis; a brother, Fritz (Donna) Gerstner, Wapakoneta; a sister, Carolyn (Gail) Myers, Uniopolis; and two granddaughters.
   Deceased are a brother, Dean, and an infant sister, Mary.
   He retired after 21 years of service as a sales manager with Cummins-Ohio. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church, Fryburg. He was a graduate of Jackson Center High School and a member of the Ohio National Guard.
   Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, the Rev. Oscar Seger officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
   Calling is 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Long & Folk Chapel, Wapakoneta.

Sandra Shawver

Sandra L. Shawver, 62, 788 E. 300 South, Portland, Ind., died early morning July 24, 2006, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
   She was born May 24, 1944, in Pontiac, Mich., to Ted and Sarah Whitesell Stouder. In 1961, she married Pete Shawver, who survives.
   Also surviving are three sons, Zane, Jeff and Pete, all of Portland; two daughters, Kim (Chuck) Post, Celina, and Sherry (Ernie) Pyle, Decatur, Ind.; four sisters, Carol Miller, Eugene, Ore., Trudy Collins, Gaston, Ind., and Donna Alexander and Tammy Guthrie, both of Portland; 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Baird-Freeman Funeral Home, Portland, the Rev. Hugh Kelly officiating. Burial will follow at Lawndale Cemetery, Ridgeville, Ind.
   Calling is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
   Contributions can be made to Jay County Cancer Society or State of the Heart Home Health & Hospice, Coldwater.


Kenneth Thielker

New Bremen native Kenneth E. Thielker, 79, a resident of the Auglaize Acres of Wapakoneta, for the past five years, died at 7:17 a.m. July 24, 2006, in the emergency room of Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys.
   He was born Oct. 11, 1926, near New Bremen, to Elmer and Hulda Schmidt Thielker.
   Survivors are a nephew, Robert Bernhold, Minster; two nieces, Ann Diedrich, Siebring, Fla., and Linda Bernhold, Las Cruces, N.M.; and a number of great nephews and nieces.
   Deceased is a sister, Mary Jane Bernhold.
   He worked at the former Kuenzel Woolen Mills in New Bremen and also at the woolen mills in Piqua and St. Marys. He also did lawn work in the New Bremen area. He was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ, New Bremen.
   Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home, New Bremen, the Rev. John W. Tostrick officiating. Burial will follow in German Protestant Cemetery, New Bremen.
   Calling hours is after noon Wednesday at the funeral home.


Eugene Wheeler

Eugene Jerome "Jack" Wheeler, 87, of Celina, died July 24, 2006, at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima.
   He was born June 2, 1919, in Oakdale, Tenn., to Enos Jerome and Ella Lee (Nance) Wheeler. On Nov. 25, 1939, he married Hazel Juanita Wiles, who died April 18, 1982. On Aug. 4, 1982, he married Lockie Hawkins, who survives.
   Also surviving are four daughters, Ella (William) Sanchez, Corona, Calif., Cheryl (Ray) Willis, Lima, Jacklene (Ronald) Wick, Sidney, and Kathleen (Terry) Reiff, Rockford; three stepsons, Bill (Pat) Hawkins, Wabash, Ind., and John and Jim (Linda) Hawkins, all of Celina; two stepdaughters, Diane (Allan) Rathburn, Kalamazoo, Mich., and Nancy Hawkins, Maria Stein; four brothers, Robert William, Cridersville, Joe, of Florida, Alonzo, of Elida, and Richard, Lima; a sister, Helen Wilson Farrar, Silver Springs, Md.; 27 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
   Deceased are two sons, Robert Jerome and Cecil Eugene; a daughter, Anita Jane; three sisters, Margaret, Mary Elizabeth and Gloria; and two brothers, George and David.
   He worked 25 years at Westinghouse, Lima, and was self-employed as a carpenter in Lima and Celina. He was a pastor of First Baptist Church, Celina and Wapakoneta, and Jefferson Street Baptist Church, Lima. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Wapakoneta, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5713, Celina. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a medic in the European Theatre from 1943-1946.
   Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral home, Celina, the Rev. Herstie Griffis officiating. Burial is at Swamp College Cemetery, Celina, with graveside military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5713 and American Legion 210, both of Celina.
   Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home, Celina.
   Contributions can be made to a charity of donor's choice.
