Richard Larlham

Richard Larlham, 95, of 702 Columbia St., St. Marys, died at 8:47 p.m. Sept. 4, 2006, at Valley Nursing Home, St. Marys.
   He was born April 10, 1911, in Greenwood Lake, N.Y., to Richard and Della Rierson Larlham. On Nov. 21, 1937, he married Hattie Gadd, who died Feb. 28, 1996.
   Survivors are two sons, Charles (Laura), Shelby Twp., Mich., and Giles (Cassie), Kent; a daughter, Lyndella (Burton) Andrews, St. Marys; a foster son, Diego Marcos, Quiche, Guatemala; a sister, Jean Franklin, Greewood Lake, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
   Deceased are three brothers, Jack, Bill and Oliver; and four sisters, Veola, Gwen, Evelyn and Priscilla.
   He was retired from Chicago Bridge and Iron Company, Chicago, where he was master welder, and worked at Standard Slag and Gravel, Mantua; and the Hattie Larlham Foundation, Mantua, where he was a fundraiser and business manager. He and his wife were missionaries in Guatemala.
   Services are 3 p.m. Wednesday at Green's Funeral home, Mantua. Burial will follow on the Hattie Larlham Foundation Grounds, Mantua.
   Calling is 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home, St. Marys, and 3-7 p.m. Tuesday at Green's Funeral Home, Mantua.

Betty Proffitt

Betty J. Proffitt, 84, of Celina, died Sept. 6, 2006.
   She was born Dec.19, 1921, in Middletown, to Samuel W. and Hilda F. Stull. She married Walter Proffitt, who is deceased.
   Survivors are three daughters, Mary (Robert) Hayes, LaGrange, Ind., Jane (Mark) McMullin, Moores Hill, Ind., and Sheila (Greg) Smith, Campbellsville, Ky.; a brother, Russell (Virginia) Stull, Hamilton; three sisters, Dorothy Lindsey, Fairfield, Barbara Lindsey, Franklin, and Gloria Ann (Ray) Ruble, Dothan, Ala.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   She was a licensed practical nurse and nursing home administrator retiring after more than 40 years of service. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1577, Camden; American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary Post 122, Liberty, Ind.; Golden Needles and Red Hatters.
   A daughter, Nancy Montgomery-Jefferies is deceased.
   Services are 1:30 p.m. Friday at Dalton Funeral Home, Germantown, the Rev. Jesse Thornton officiating. Burial is at College Corner Cemetery.
   Calling is after noon Friday at the funeral home.


Orla Smith

Orla E. Smith, 83, of Portland, Ind., died Sept. 6, 2006, at his residence.
   He was born Sept. 3, 1923, in Van Wert, to Clinton and Alice Sullenberger Smith. On Sept. 3, 1949, he married Annabelle Flory, who survives.
   Survivors are a son, Jeff V., Portland, Ind.; a daughter, Rhonda A. Ludy, Portland; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a foster grandchild; and four foster great-grandchildren.
   He was a former employee of Sheller Globe Corp. for 33 years and a farmer in Noble Twp., Ind. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II, in the European Theater. He was a member of American Legion Post 211, Portland, Ind., Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2840, Salamonia, Ind., and Bellefountain United Methodist Church. He was a 1943 graduate of Madison Township School.
   Services are 11 a.m. at the church the Rev. Bob Denney officiating. Burial will follow at Salamonia Cemetery with full military graveside rights.
   Calling is 3-7 p.m. Friday at Portland Chapel of Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home, and after 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
   Contributions can be made to the church fund or State of the Heart Home Health and Hospice.


Kathleen Wangler

Kathleen S. Wangler, 48, of Lima, died at 5:54 a.m. Sept. 4, 2006, at Lima Memorial Hospital. Cause of death is under investigation, see article page A3.
   She was born May 12, 1958, in Coldwater, to Elmer J. and Sara McGill Schlarman, who survive in Celina. On May 6, 1977, she married Mark A. Wangler, who survives.
   Also surviving are two sons, Nathan D. and Aaron M., both at University of Cincinnati; three brothers, Richard Schlarman, Celina, Donald (Yvette) Schlarman, Hilliard, and Joseph (Mellissa) Schlarman, Dublin; and two sisters, Joann (Joel) Zacharias and Diana (Shannon) Boedicker, all of Celina.
   She was a middle and high school teacher in local school systems, including Bath and Perry, a member of Grace Baptist Church, Lima. She was a 1976 graduate of Celina High School and was graduated from The Ohio State University with a bachelors of science degree.
   Services are 10 a.m. Friday at the church the Rev. Matthew Oliver officiating. Burial is at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Celina.
   Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at Chiles & Sons-Laman Lewis Chapel, Lima.
