New church monument
Photo by Shelley Grieshop/The Daily Standard

Pictured above is a red-granite stone monument of the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes, which was placed on the lawn of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Coldwater last week. The church received the monument as a bequest from parish member Marjorie Birkmeyer, in memory of her mother, Naomi. The idea was endorsed by the parish council in support of Project Moses, an organization based in Omaha, Neb., which urges churches to display the Ten Commandments publicly. The idea counters recent efforts from various groups to have similar monuments removed from public property, according to Coldwater cluster pastor, the Rev. Rick Walling. A dedication service is being planned in the near future.
