Poinsettias brighten the season
Photo by Mark Pummell/The Daily Standard

Anna Bowers, hardware manager at Menard's in Celina, waters a row of poinsettia plants on Thursday morning. Today is National Poinsettia Day, which marks the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett, an American botanist, physician and minister to Mexico. In 1828, he sent cuttings of the plant he'd discovered in Southern Mexico to his home in Charleston, S.C.
