St. Henry principal retiring after 21 years

Sandy Stammen gives tearful farewell during board meeting

By Kathy Thompson
ST. HENRY - Sandy Stammen couldn't keep the tears from her eyes as her resignation letter was read at Monday's school board meeting.
Stammen, 51, is retiring after serving 21 years as the St. Henry Elementary School principal. While she loves her job, co-workers and students, she feels it's time to spend time with her family, she said.
She is not sure what lies ahead after her final day June 30 but said she will never forget her time at the school.
"I love this school district," Stammen said. "I love the kids, the teachers, the board, the superintendents I've worked with. I really don't know how I'll feel that first day of school when I don't have to go to work or even how I'll feel this summer when I would usually be either advancing my education, tutoring students or teaching. But I know this is the right time to go."
Board president Paul Moorman said people in the district will miss Stammen.
"Sandy has dedicated her life to this school district," Moorman said. "We're going to miss her a lot."
Stammen has been in education for 30 years. The board has not begun the process of replacing Stammen.
In other action, the board,
• accepted the resignation of Kailey Guillozet, a middle school cheer coach.
• approved the updated boundary map for the no transportation zone. No students are affected by the new map, Moorman said.
• learned the Franklin B. Walter Banquet is at 6:30 p.m. April 1 at Romer's in Celina.
• gave superintendent Julie Garke permission to seek bids for a new school bus. Garke said she would like to see the school have a new bus before school starts in the fall.
• learned the open enrollment deadline is April 30.
