Local POW honored
Photo by Mark Pummell/The Daily Standard

Andy Hemmelgarn, of St. Henry, on Monday speaks during a ceremony at the Mercer County Central Services Building in Celina after receiving his World War II Prisoner of War Medal from county veterans service director Tom Risch. Hemmelgarn, 94, earned several medals during his time of service in the U.S. Army but had not received the POW medal for which he applied in 1989. Monday's date, Nov. 30, was the anniversary of the day Hemmelgarn enlisted in and was discharged from military service.
