The Coldwater Cudas swim and dive team had a strong day at their home pool in winning the diving portion of the Tri-County League Swim and Dive Championships at Memorial Pool in Coldwater on Saturday.
The Cudas scored 109 points on the day that will be added on to the scores from this Saturday's TCL Swimming Championships at Bryson Pool in Celina. The St. Marys Seahawks were second with 93 followed by Tecumseh Woods (26), New Bremen Barracudas (24), Troy-Piqua Aquatic Club (23), Troy Dolphins (22), St. Henry Stingrays (6) and Celina Dolphins (4).
The Cudas swept the boys' and girls' 15-18 age group titles with A.J. Kunk winning the boys title in a battle with teammate Isaac Osterfeld while Sawyer Weitzel, a state diving qualifier in the winter for Celina, dominated the girls' division with St. Marys' Ali Sandberg a distant second. Naomi Cervantes (girls 13-14), Aubrey Koesters (girls 11-12) and Heidi Stammen (9-10) also picked up wins for the Cuda ladies.
St. Marys dominated the boys' competition with wins from Blake Dingledine (8-under), Reese Triplett (9-10), Isaac Torsell (11-12) and Kameron Maclean (13-14).
Simone Scribner of Troy-Piqua captured the only non-Coldwater/St. Marys group win in the girls' 8-under division.

GLSCL BASEBALL

The Mariners rallied in both of their games over the weekend to earn the home-and-home sweep of the Monarchs and to move 2 1/2 games ahead of Irish Hills for second place in the GLSCL North. Lima clinched the North Division over the weekend and a second-place finish would give the Mariners a home playoff game when the postseason begins July 26.
On Saturday, the Mariners scored five runs in the top of the seventh to overcome a 5-3 deficit to pick up the win. Tyler Paulsen's three-run home run in the inning - his second of the game - set a new team record for homers in a season with seven.
Payton Coddou pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the win.
Paulsen was 2-for-5 with five RBIs in the contest. Justin Mercer added two hits and Nik Zouras and Tyler Schmidt each had doubles.
Sunday night at Veterans field in Coldwater, the Monarchs tied the game with two runs in the top of the eighth on Ross Haffey's two-run home run, but the Mariners scored twice in the bottom of the inning to complete the sweep.
Conner Henderson began the rally with a double to right. After newcomer Will LaRue bunted Henderson to second, Michael Brown singled in the go-ahead run. After a walk to Matt Berler, Paulsen singled to center to score Brown for insurance.
Garry Clift, who relieved Nicholas Newton to get the final out in the eighth, pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn the win. Newton scattered seven hits and struck out nine in 7 2/3 innings.
Paulsen kept up his hot hitting with a 2-for-4 game with another home run and two RBIs. Schmidt also drove in two runs.
The Mariners are off until Thursday as the GLSCL holds its All-Star Game on Tuesday at Prasco Park in Mason. Paulsen, infielder Thomas Lindeman and pitcher Joey Filosa were selected to play for the Red Team.
