A farmer tills a field along state Route 29 between Celina and St. Marys on Tuesday evening. Farmers in Mercer County are starting to plant corn and a few soybeans, said Mike Baucher, a technician at the Mercer County Farm Service Agency in Celina. Others are waiting to see how much rain falls today before beginning to plant, he said. After today, the weather looks favorable for planting into next week. Wheat acres are down about 20 percent in the county this growing season, Baucher said, likely due to high input costs to grow the crop and low wheat prices.
