Work is underway at St. Charles Senior Living Community in Carthagena to remove a nearly century-old smokestack. After cracks surfaced on the smokestack, facility officials decided to remove the structure that had been built in 1921 as part of the center's coal heating system, facility manager Amy Day said. Officials stopped using coal to heat the building in 2005. Workers are proceeding carefully to minimize damage to the building on which it stands.
