St. Marys school levy fails
By Ed Gebert
ST. MARYS - The school district's 1.5 percent earned-income tax request was rejected by voters on Tuesday.
The levy request garnered 1,223 votes in favor and 1,863 votes, or 59 percent of the total, against it. The loss has members of the school board looking at possible budget cuts.
"We're really disappointed. We have a board meeting (tonight). We'll have to see what we can do and what cuts we will have to make," board president Karl Dammeyer said.
If the tax had passed, it would have raised about $3.6 million annually for the district's operations budget.
The five-year financial forecast shows the district in deficit spending with cash balances depleted by 2020 if no changes to expenditures or revenues are made.
