After beating every Western Buckeye League opponent early in the year at the Celina Invitational, St. Marys boys' golf coach Steve Schmitmeyer knew where his team stood entering league play.
On Thursday, the Roughriders stood atop the WBL standings.
For the second time in school history, St. Marys captured the league crown - winning the tournament with a score of 343 at Eagle Rock Golf Course in Defiance.
The Roughriders - who went unbeaten in WBL dual matches - last won a golf league title in 2000.
"All the WBL teams were at the Celina Invitational, and since we beat them all there, I thought we had a good chance to (win a league title), but you have to go to other team's courses, so that makes it a tough job," Schmitmeyer said. "I thought there was an outside shot, but who thinks they can run the table?"
St. Marys' golfer Austin Boley was the medalist, earning all-league honors with a 79. He defeated Bath's Briton Hall in a three-hole playoff to win the tournament.
"I don't think there is anyone in this league who has worked harder than Austin has at his game this spring, summer and fall," Schmitmeyer said. "The kid is out there playing a minimum of 18 holes every day, sometimes playing nine holes before school, sometimes going out to the range after a match or playing another nine. He's just super dedicated and all of his hard work paid off today."
Reese Sweigart shot an 85 for the Roughriders and Clay Quellhorst carded an 89. Each joined Boley on the all-league team. Nathan Kuffner added a 90 while Michael Baldwin shot a 97 and Calvin Caywood a 101.
"They put in hard work all summer long," Schmitmeyer said. "They played in the Lima Junior program. They committed to playing every day. This team worked super hard to get this thing done."
Shawnee finished runner-up with a score of 347 and Defiance was third with a 354. Wapakoneta's Drew Zwiebel was WBL Player of the Year, racking up 157 1/2 points on the season. He placed third in the tournament.
