AAP sale to Kosei planned

By Tom Stankard
ST. MARYS - Hitachi Metals, parent company of AAP St. Marys Corp., plans to sell the aluminum wheel manufacturing company to Kosei Aluminum of Japan, an AAP employee confirmed to the newspaper on Wednesday.
A Hitachi Metals spokesperson told the newspaper the sale is expected to occur March 1. Company officials have been considering selling the St. Marys facility for six months. The business will continue to be operational and no employee layoffs are expected.
St. Marys Community Development Director Michael Burkholder said AAP employs about 400-500 people. The business was founded in 1988. Since then, sales have resulted in six major expansions, increasing production to 3 million wheels per year, according to the company's website.
Kosei Aluminum Co. also produces aluminum wheels among other automative parts.
Burkholder said he didn't want to comment until the announcement is official. Mayor Pat McGowan also declined to comment.
