UNION CITY - Preliminary autopsy results on a former Fort Recovery man who died during a shootout with police indicate he died from a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to an Indiana State Police new release.
Michael R. Evans, 38, was found dead by the Randolph County SWAT team after an incident in which he opened fire on Union City, Indiana, police officers, according to the release.
At 6:56 a.m. Monday, the Randolph County 911 Emergency Dispatch Center reportedly received a call reporting a suspicious subject hiding in the bushes at 114 Pleasant Drive, Union City.
Police officers arrived on the scene at about 6:58 a.m., the release stated. When officers approached the residence, they reportedly were fired upon by a subject later identified as Evans, who was hidden in the bushes at the southeast corner of the residence.
The officers sought cover and returned gunfire in the suspect's direction. Other officers responded to the area and created a perimeter around the residence, and all Randolph Eastern School Corporation schools were reportedly placed on lockdown as a precaution. The Randolph County SWAT team arrived shortly after and found Evans unresponsive in the bushes. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.
State police officer Ryan Davis told the newspaper no law enforcement officers or bystanders had been injured in the shooting.
An autopsy was performed on Tuesday, and preliminary results reportedly indicate Evans died of a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound. According to the ISP news release, no indication of any other gunshot wounds or trauma was found on Evans' body.
The investigation is ongoing.
