'Big' honor

New Bremen's Jones named Big Ten Player of the Week

Two days after her high school alma mater captured another state volleyball title, University of Michigan sophomore Paige Jones received an honor of her own.
The New Bremen graduate earned her first Big Ten Volleyball Player of the Week award after helping the Wolverines to two big conference match wins last week.
Jones averaged 4.75 kills per set, recorded 19 digs and served up four aces in wins over Michigan State and Illinois. Against the rival Spartans, Jones tied her collegiate-career best with 26 kills.
Jones is third in the Big Ten with 3.83 kills per set and has recorded double-doubles in kills and digs in 13 of 14 conference matches.
Michigan (17-7, 10-4 Big Ten) hosts Iowa on Wednesday at Cliff Keen Arena.
WHAC Tournament starts this week
The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference begins its tournament on Wednesday.
One matchup pits fourth-seed University of Northwestern Ohio taking on fifth-seed Indiana Tech at the Garage in Lima.
UNOH (23-11, 13-7 WHAC) senior Erika Angstmann (St. Marys) ranks second in the WHAC with 4.1 kills per set. Angstmann is third on the team in total blocks with 54 and has served up 26 aces.
Racers teammate Devon Heitkamp (New Bremen) leads the team in blocks with 92 and is second to Angstmann in kills with 3.2 per set.
For the Warriors (25-9, 13-7 WHAC), junior Olivia Niekamp (St. Henry) is averaging 2.5 kills per set.
Cougars end season
The University of Saint Francis (Indiana) lost to Grace College in five sets in the Crossroads League tournament on Saturday.
Junior Kendra Siefring (Fort Recovery) had 16 kills in the match, allowing her to finish the season with a team-high 3.02 kills per set for the Cougars.
Polar Bears Win OAC
Paige Hartings (Coldwater) and 12th-ranked Ohio Northern won the Ohio Athletic Conference title with a 21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 27-25, 16-14 victory over Otterbein.
Hartings finished with one kill and one block in two sets played.
The Polar Bears, 26-5 on the season, will now take part in the Division III Women's Volleyball Tournament. On Thursday, the team travels to Grand Rapids, Michigan, to play Aurora in the first round. It's the 32nd appearance for ONU in the 40th year of the event.
MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Bruns Shines for Findlay
Marion Local's all-time leading scorer, Nate Bruns, is getting buckets in his freshman season with Findlay.
He had a career-high 17 points plus 10 boards in leading the Oilers past Quincy 88-75 on Saturday, their first win this season. A day prior, Bruns scored eight points in a 67-59 loss to Truman.
The Oilers, now 1-1, are ranked 17th in Division II. Charlie Ernst's (Minster) Findlay squad visits Ferris State this Saturday.
Mikesell Helps
Flyers Win Opener
Ryan Mikesell (St. Henry) had 12 points, four rebounds and three assists in Dayton's 86-81, season-opening win over Indiana State on Saturday.
Obi Toppin poured in 29 points and tallied 12 rebounds to lead the way for Dayton, which hosts Charleston Southern this Saturday.
Knapke, Rockets Get First Win
After losing at Valpo to start the season, the Rockets of Toledo got in the win column on Sunday.
Luke Knapke (Marion Local) had 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists in Toledo's 96-70 rout of Marshall. Spencer Littleson scored a game-high 27 points for the Rockets, now 1-1.
Toledo welcomes Robert Morris to Savage Arena on Saturday.
USF out to 4-0 start
The University of Saint Francis (Indiana) improved to 4-0 with an 88-64 win over Holy Family College last Friday in Fort Wayne.
Freshman Jarod Schulze (Minter) scored one point in six minutes of action. Schulze has played in two games this season for a total of 10 minutes and scored three points.
Saint Francis is at Michigan-Dearborn tonight.
WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Prenger Debuts With Xavier
Courtney Prenger (Minster) had a strong debut for the Xavier Musketeers. She played 28 minutes in a season-opening, 70-63 win over Utah at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, recording eight points, nine rebounds and three steals.
The 1-0 Musketeers head to Philadelphia on Saturday to play Temple.
Cougars take first loss
The University of Saint Francis (Indiana) suffered its first loss of the season in a 64-52 loss to St. Francis (Illinois) at the Marian Classic in Indianapolis.
Junior Whitney Will (Fort Recovery) finished with two points in 11 minutes of action. Will is averaging 3.4 points per game this season.
The Cougars (4-1) host Ohio Christian University tonight.
PRO BASKETBALL
Bueno Bruns
Ryan Bruns (Marion Local) scored 22 points on 9-of-18 shooting plus had 11 rebounds in Aquimisa Carbajosa's 89-80 win over Gijon Basket on Saturday.
Bruns is averaging 15.2 points and 8.3 rebounds for his team, which leads the 14-team Spanish EBA Group A-B with a perfect 6-0 record.
