Davy Winans
Davy Lee Winans, age 90, of Celina, passed away of natural causes on April 9, 2020 at the Gardens of Celina. He died peacefully with his loving children by his side.
Born on June 17, 1929 in West Lafayette, IN, he was a son of the late Denward Maxwell "Max" Winans and Irene Henderson Winans. From a very early age, he and his brother, Pat, were raised by their grandmother, Elizabeth Winans. On April 21, 1956, he married Margaret Bollenbacher. Margaret and Davy were happily married for 57 years until her death.
Davy was preceded in death by his three brothers and their wives, Max Winans Jr., who died in childhood, Max Dee and Jean Winans and Philamon Patrick "Pat" and June Winans Hyatt.
Davy is survived by and will be sorely missed by his daughters, Rebecca "Becky" Winans, Celina, Jane (Scott) Hall, Galena, his son, Mike Winans, Celina and several nieces and nephews.
A 1948 graduate of Celina High School, Davy was employed at Mersman Tables from 1948-1951. He then was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Upon returning from his tour of duty, which took him to Japan and the battlefields of Korea, he resumed his employment at Mersman Tables. Davy worked as a pattern maker and retired after 42 years. While employed there, he held a position with the Mersmans Federal Credit Union.
Davy was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. He was also a life member of the Celina VFW Post #5713, a life member of the Celina American Legion Post #210, the AMVETS and the Korean War Veterans Association.
Davy was a very talented woodworker and loved to make furniture for his family. He also enjoyed fishing, viewing steam locomotives, listening to polka music, attending antique engine shows and air shows and shopping at flea markets. He loved visiting with fellow Korean War vets, friends and family and going out to eat. Davy and Margaret enjoyed going on bus trips together and vacationing in Sault Ste. Marie, MI.
Davy made the selfless gift of donating his body to the Boonshoft Medical Center at Wright State University. A memorial service will be held at a later time to be announced when the restrictions of COVID-19 have been lifted.
