The St. Henry girls golf team has their Wednesday blue.
And both fashion choices are synonymous with winning.
Ellen Naumann repeated as tournament medalist with a 3-under 69 and the Redskins repeated as Gary Broering Memorial champions with a score of 386 on Wednesday at the Mercer County Elks Golf Club.
The tournament is held in remembrance of St. Henry's late coach, who guided the team to back-to-back state appearances in 2017 and 2018 before passing away in 2019 after a battle with cancer. St. Henry has won the tournament both years it has been held, and the team wears blue to honor Broering.
"They said they wanted to wear blue for Gary," said Wendi Moorman, the current coach of St. Henry and daughter of Broering. "Dad wore a blue bracelet after he was diagnosed. They gave it to him in the hospital. I don't know if it was because of the blue bracelet or if it was because he wore blue a lot when it was match time, but (the team) has stuck with that. That's been our color theme for both years.
"I appreciate that - I think it keeps his memory alive for even the girls who didn't play under him," she added. "They understand what he meant to the program."
St. Henry's 2019 winning total at the tournament was 20 strokes better than it was Wednesday. But Naumann's medalist score was 11 better than what she won with in 2019. The next closest to her score on Wednesday was Fort Recovery's Jalyn Bruns, who shot a 92.
"Ellen had a fantastic round," Moorman said. "She was 2-under on the front and 1-under on the back. She had a great day today."
Courtney Clune (99), Dana Rindler (100) and Tori Staugler (118) were the other three scorers for St. Henry, which is seeking a fourth straight trip to state and a third straight Midwest Athletic Conference title.
"Courtney shot a 99 - 49 on the front, 50 on the back," Moorman noted. "It kept her under 100, which I'm sure she really likes. She ended up fourth for the day. That's a great round. Proud of that. Dana Rindler played our three spot today. She had a 53 on the front and came in with a 47 on the back. She really picked it up on the back and ended up fifth overall.
"I'm pretty pleased with that score," the coach continued. "Two days of practice and you kind of don't know what to expect. That's a really good start."
Fort Recovery took runner-up honors with a team total of 425. Coldwater (433), Wapakoneta (447), Celina (454), Delphos Jefferson (450), Lincolnview (467), Marion Local and Fort Loramie (both with 490) rounded out the standings.
Fort Recovery's Shelby Stammen was third in the tournament with a 98. Following her for the Indians were Trisha Gaerke (116) and Paige Bihn (119).
Coldwater's Lexi Wright finished in a three-way tie for fifth place with a 100. Laney Finke (106), Grace Buschur (113) and Jordan Hemmelgarn (114) were the other Cavalier scorers.
Celina's Grace Romer carded a 100 to join Coldwater's Wright and St. Henry's Rindler in the three-way tie for fifth - with all three players edging Wapakoneta's Taylor West (101) to avoid a four-way tie. Kendra Marsee (108), Ashtyn Huber (121) and Maddie Fleck (125) were the other Bulldog scorers.
Marion Local's top finisher (Aliyah Arling) and Fort Loramie's (Jordan Koverman) each carded a 116. New Bremen, which did not have a complete team, was led by Abbie Burden's 131.
St. Henry, Fort Recovery and New Bremen travel to Stillwater Valley Golf Club in Versailles for the annual Lady Tiger Tee tournament today.
