Reducing dam slope

Crews move dirt on Friday along West Bank Road to reduce the slope and make it easier to mow the earthen dam that holds back Grand Lake. The work continues a project the state began four years ago when it removed trees along the road as part of a statewide effort to protect state-maintained dams, Grand Lake St. Marys State Park Director Dave Faler said. Tree roots reportedly cause internal soil erosion and could increase the risk of dam failure. The road could remain closed for another month, Faler said.
