Roy McDorman
Roy L. McDorman, age 84, of Mendon, went to be with the Lord at 9:53 p.m. on Tuesday, February 23, 2021, at his residence, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on October 28, 1936, in Mendon, he was a son of the late John & Cecile (Denny) McDorman. He was raised by his beloved dad and mom, William "Bill" and Juanita Whetstone of Mendon, who also preceded him in death.
Roy graduated from Mendon-Union High School with the Class of 1954. Surviving is wife of nearly 66 years, Barbara A. (Austin) McDorman. They were married on April 21, 1955.
He served in the Ohio National Guard as a Communications Officer for 8 years. Roy always provided for his family. He was a farmer for most of his life, while also working at other jobs. Roy had been employed at a grain mill in Ohio City, a sawmill in Schumm, and Pollock's Furniture Store in Van Wert, then worked for years as a night guard at Huffy's in Celina.
Showing ponies at area fairs with his sons was a favorite activity he enjoyed for many years. Roy also loved fishing with his family. He was a member, and also proudly served as Chaplain of Mendon American Legion Post #2019, and was a member of the Mendon United Methodist Church. Roy will be remembered as a great father and grandfather.
In addition to his wife, Roy is survived by his two sons: Craig R. McDorman of Mendon and James F. (Robin Kaylor) McDorman of Seymour, Indiana, daughter-in-law, Laurie A. (Wessel) McDorman of Mendon, four grandchildren: Shawn (Lisa) McDorman of Columbus, Christopher (Kristin) McDorman of Ohio City, Jessica (George) Miller of Mendon, and Amanda (Patrick Thomas) McDorman of Bellefontaine, six great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Roy was preceded in death by his son, Randy J. McDorman, a great grandson, Austin McDorman, two brothers: Earl and Dale McDorman, and four sisters: Ethel Jamieson, Ione Byer, Helen Shook, and Clarissa McDorman.
Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 Noon, Monday, March 1, at the Mendon United Methodist Church, with Pastor Rob Glenn, officiating. Burial will follow at Tomlinson Cemetery in Union Township, with Military Rites conducted by Celina American Legion Post #210 and VFW Post #5713.
Calling Hours are at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home in Mendon, from 12:00 Noon to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 28, and an hour prior to Services on Monday, at the Church.
Those attending are required to wear masks, practice social distancing as much as possible, and follow the COVID-19 guidelines established by Governor DeWine and the Ohio Department of Health.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Grand Lake Hospice or Mendon United Methodist Church.
