Coldwater's Ellie Schneider (18) keeps control of the ball during Tuesday's tournament soccer match with Spencerville. Schneider scored the first goal of the match as the Cavaliers won 3-0.
COLDWATER - The first time Coldwater and Spencerville played in girls soccer, the Cavaliers came away with a 1-0 win.
Tuesday night in the teams' Division III sectional opener, the Cavaliers didn't waste time getting the lead and keeping it.
The Cavaliers scored six minutes into the match, added two more first-half goals and let the defense take control the rest of the way with a 3-0 win over the Bearcats at chilly, windy and wet Cavalier Stadium.
Coldwater (9-7-1) travels to Continental on Thursday to take on the 8-8-1 Pirates in the sectional final starting at 5 p.m.
"We had a game similar to (Tuesday) the last time," said Coldwater coach Paul Dingledine. "We had shot after shot and couldn't get it in. Tonight we got one in early and a couple nice safety goals."
Ellie Schneider got the scoring underway at the 34:07 mark of the first half after taking a pass from Leah Kaiser and putting it past Bearcat keeper Jaelyn Boop.
It took 26 minutes for the second goal to come across as Hope Hemmelgarn found Avery Knapke with a solid pass. Knapke put the shot away to make it 2-0 with 7:57 to play in the first half.

Coldwater's Leah Kaiser (3) battles for possession of the ball during Tuesday's Division III soccer sectional match with Spencerville.
Four minutes later, Kaiser added on a goal of her own, getting the ball on a breakaway and putting it in the back of the net with 3:52 remaining in the half to make it 3-0.
That was all for the offense as both teams played solid defense throughout the second half. Coldwater took just two shots at the goal in the final 40 minutes after trying six in the first half.
Spencerville, which had just 11 players suited up for the match, did not attempt a shot on frame all evening and had one corner kick to the Cavaliers' five.
"Couldn't do anything in the second half (because) of the pretty stiff wind we were going into," Dingledine said. "Still, I think we controlled the second half.
"We got out of the game injury-free and everybody got playing time. Now we'll see what we can do against Continental."
