Board's renewal levy on ballot

By Erin Gardner
CELINA - Mercer County voters will decide if a current Mercer County Board of Developmental Disabilities operating tax levy will be renewed at the Nov. 8 general election.
The six-year, 2.42-mill tax levy was first passed in 2005 and has been renewed three times, according to information from the Mercer County Board of Developmental Disabilities.
The levy generates $1.97 million annually and costs the owner of a $100,000 home $48.04 per year, according to Laura Pease of the Mercer County Auditor's office.
Residents will continue to pay the same amount in taxes if the levy passes.
Funds generated by the levy are used to pay for basic daily operational expenses, according to Mercer DD. The number of children receiving services from the board has increased due to increased awareness on the part of doctors who can refer children with disabilities.     The number of adults receiving services has also increased due to medical advances that extend the lives of individuals with disabilities. Mercer DD serves 200 children ages 1-3, 100 school-aged children and 200 adults.
