Leroy Peters
Leroy Alden Peters passed away on Feb 4, 2023 at the age of 90.
He was born on May 10, 1932 in Preble Township, IN to Elmer and Martha (Conrad) Peters. Leroy married Pat Gindelberger on April 20, 1958. It was at her encouragement that he attended Purdue and obtained a degree in Agricultural Engineering.
At the beginning of his career he worked at New Idea in Coldwater, OH. Later, they moved to the farm outside Coldwater and he farmed the land while working and running a Butler grain bin business for a number of years. He took a job at Huffy's Bicycle Corporation and worked there for 23 years. It was during this time that he was able to travel to other countries. Upon retirement he took on some contract work for Cooper Poultry Farms. Here he designed a truck that would slowly elevate to encourage the turkeys to safely and slowly depart from it.
A fourth generation German, he was a driven, hard-working man. He was never content with the status quo. When farming, he kept looking to see how he could do things better, more efficiently to increase the yield. He had an active mind that was always coming up with new projects and new ways to modify the farming equipment. Dad had the courage to try new things like "no till" when it was first introduced. When working, he did the same thing, looking for ways to do his job better. Unfortunately, people didn't always appreciate his new ideas or methods. Leroy was thrilled when he had to opportunity to travel to the Orient and other parts of the world for work on numerous occasions. This was unheard of when he was growing up. His family never left the area as farming was their life for several generations. He was the first of his family to ever get a four year college degree and he was very proud of this fact.
Leroy was never content with just these activities. He was on the board of Cheryl Ann Industries for over 10 years. He was active at Coldwater United Methodist Church serving on the PR committee and administrative board for over 50 years. In addition, he was on the Methodist church committee for approving pastors for over 10 years. He wanted to try to make a difference in others lives especially because he knew what it was like not to feel supported.
Leroy left behind three children; Randy Peters of Charlotte, NC, Cheryl Gibson (Mike) of Lynchburg, VA and Karen Hobbs (Brian) of Cherry Hill, NJ and 5 grandchildren; Carlie Peters, Mike Gibson, Will Gibson, Daniel Gibson, and Susan Gibson.
He was preceded in death by his stepsister Kate Fuhrman.
Services will be held at Coldwater United Methodist Church on Saturday Feb 11 at 1pm.
Visiting hours will be from 11:30am to 1pm at the church. A graveside service will occur after the funeral.
