M. Berdella Hemmelgarn
M. Berdella (Rose) Hemmelgarn, 99, was born on December 11, 1923, in St. Henry to the late Roman and Marie (Leistenschneider) Rose. She died on March 17, 2023, at her home in St. Henry surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death in 2018 by Leonard Hemmelgarn, her husband of 73 years.
She is survived by 10 children: Phyllis (Mark) Franck, Tipp City; Betty Hemmelgarn, Tipp City; Jim (Paulette) Hemmelgarn, Worthington; Linda Hemmelgarn, Grove City; Joanne (Bill) Niekamp, St. Henry; Mary (Don) Mrowzinski, Hilliard; Carol (Steve) Hines, Hilliard; Joe (Carole) Hemmelgarn, Highlands Ranch, CO; Bill (Sue) Hemmelgarn, St. Henry; Rick Hemmelgarn, Tipp City.
She was the proud and loving Grandmother of 24 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Alyssa Hemmelgarn and a great granddaughter, Ashley Bohman.
She is survived by one brother and two sisters and their spouses: Regina Hemmelgarn, Piqua; Joe (Donna) Rose, Coldwater; and Rita (John) Schmitmeyer, Coldwater. She is also survived by

She is preceded in death by siblings and spouses: Paul & Margaret Rose; Luke & Edna Rose; Herman Rose; Carl Rose; Eleanor & John Hake; Fred Rose; Alfred Rose and in-laws, Elmer Hemmelgarn, Adella & Jerome Halpin; Bertilla & Paul Ernst; Alma & Joe Graves; Albert & Ruth Hemmelgarn; Ivo & Doris Hemmelgarn; Ruth Hemmelgarn, Eileen Heuker, Anna Lee & Jack Kunkel, Charles Roessner.
Berdella was a member of St. Henry Catholic Church and prior to that a long time and active member of St. Bernard Church. Berdella and Leonard were long-time farmers. She was an excellent seamstress, and a gifted quilter and crocheter which she shared with family and friends. She enjoyed ballroom dancing and traveling with her husband and friends. Berdella was a cherished and much-loved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a friend to many and always willing to lend a helping hand.
The family wants to thank granddaughter, Nicole Homan, Marie Schwartz and Linda Homan and other caregivers who provided tender care to Berdella in recent years.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am on Wednesday, March 22, at St. Henry Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Bernard Cemetery Burkettsville.
Friends may call from 3:00-7:00pm on Tuesday, March 21, and from 9:00- 9:45am on Wednesday, at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home in St. Henry.
