New Bremen hosted the eighth annual Mark Ruschau Summer Volleyball Tournament on Friday. Teams from the area as well as other parts of Ohio took part in the tournament that honors the late Daily Standard sports writer.
Twelve teams qualified for the Gold Bracket after pool play during the morning. The host Cardinals were host by St. Marys, Fort Recovery, Ottawa-Glandorf, Minster, Eastwood, Parkway, Liberty-Benton, Highland, Heritage and Berlin Hiland.
New Bremen (left), seeded second, won the tournament. After a first-round bye, the Cardinals defeated Heritage and then Highland to reach the finals against Fort Recovery (right), which defeated St. Marys in the opening round before upsetting the top-seed St. Henry in the quarterfinals and then beating Eastwood in the semifinals.
Teams that did not make the top 12 played in the consolation Silver Bracket. Celina defeated Anna in the semifinal before beating Leipsic in the final.
