MERCER COUNTY - Saturday at the Mercer County Elks was a perfect day for golf.
At the Midwest Athletic Conference boys golf tournament, the scores were blistering as a battle for the conference title came down between Minster, Delphos St. John's and Coldwater.
St. John's edged Minster 310-311 to win the tournament, but the Wildcats' runner-up showing along with a 9-0 regular season dual match record allowed Minster to win its 15th overall conference title. Last year, St. John's win in the tournament final allowed the Blue Jays to snap the Wildcats' four-year title streak by a 34-32 margin based on two points for every dual match win and 18 points for winning the tournament. Minster returned the favor, edging St. John's by the same 34-32 margin.
"The boys knew what it was all about when they got here today," said Minster coach Jeremy Magoto, who earns the Coach of the Year honor that goes to the conference champs. "I could tell in their nerves. You can tell when someone really wants something really bad. That's fun to compete like that and get the (trophy) back in the school hallways."
Both the Wildcats and Blue Jays had three golfers breaking 80 on the day. Bryce Prenger finished fifth overall with a 76 with Jack Meyer tying for sixth with a 77 and Louis Magoto shooting a 78. Reese Beair and Andrew Wiss each shot an 80 with Tyler Stueve carding an 86.
St. John's countered with Parker Will finishing tournament runner-up with a 73. Collin Feathers shot a 75 with Tyce McClain adding a 78. Jackson Kill (84), Ashton Milligan (90) and Grady Holdgreve (118) rounded out the rounded out the Blue Jay scorecard.
Coldwater had a solid day to finish third with a 317. Fort Recovery was fourth with a 330 with Marion Local taking fifth with a 337. Rounding out the team standings were Versailles (338), St. Henry (351), Parkway (369), New Bremen (380) and New Knoxville (477).
"The MAC is really turning into a strong golf conference," said coach Magoto. "Those numbers are so impressive and fun to be a part of. It blows your mind. Last year, 323 was our best 18-hole round. This year, it's like somewhere in the pack."
The battle for Golfer of the Year honors came down to Feathers and Coldwater's Ben Giere. Giere had a big day on his home course, recording an eagle on 15 which helped him finish with a 2-under 70 to take tournament medalist honors.
"That was the turning point for me," said Giere of the eagle. "It was nice. Whenever the conditions get a little windy towards the end of the tournament, you'd think the scores would go up a bit. If you can keep yourself in there and not give up too many, you have a good chance to continue a hot streak.
Feathers though, accumulated enough points in the tournament to stay ahead of Giere and earn Golfer of the Year honors by a 148-146 margin.
Coldwater's Braxton Howell finished with a 74 to finish third overall. Cavalier Zach Diller shot an 84 with Landon Knapke coming in with an 89. Briggs Howell (93) and Oliver Vickery (96) rounded out the scoring.
Fort Recovery got a 46 from Reece LeFevre along with an 81 from Eli Lennartz. Keegan Muhlenkamp (84), Nate Jutte (86), Alex Dues (89) and Matthew Romer (94) rounded out the scoring.
