Renewal levy with increase on ballot
Blackcreek Township fire levy
By Erin Gardner
BLACKCREEK TOWNSHIP - Township voters will decide the fate of a five-year, 1.25-mill with a 0.35-mill increase fire protection renewal levy on the Nov. 7 general election ballot.
The levy, with the increase, would generate $39,000 annually for the township's fire protection services and cost the owner of a $100,000 home $56 per year, said Mercer County Assistant Prosecutor Andy Hinders. It currently collects $36,471 and costs the owner of a $100,000 home $12.50 per year.
The increase is necessary due to higher fuel prices, more expensive equipment and costlier training, he said.
Hinders said the funds raised will pay for the annual contract split between Rockford, Chattanooga and Willshire fire departments. The fire departments are volunteer-based, he said.
