Montezuma Fire Department responded to a corn stubble fire at East Karafit Road, just south of State Route 219 Wednesday afternoon. Montezuma Fire Chief Lee Braun suspects it was a trash fire that got out of control said the fire is still under investigation. Grass trucks sprayed water on the stubble while a farmer used a chisel plow to mix the stubble with dirt. A total of three grass trucks, two engines and two tankers from Montezuma, Chickasaw and Coldwater responded. The National Weather Service issued a special "enhanced fire danger" warning Wednesday. "The combination of a very dry atmosphere and low fuel moisture will result in an enhanced fire danger this afternoon. Isolated wind gusts will also be possible," the Weather Service said. People were advised to "use extreme caution since fires can quickly get out of hand under these conditions."
