MINSTER - Superintendent Josh Meyer advised school board members on Monday to begin pursuing land acquisitions for future building needs.

Meyer told the board that at some point in time the campus will need to expand to accommodate additional students and evolving educational approaches that prioritize small group and individual instruction.

Minster High School was built in 1965, with classroom, vocational area and office additions added in 1989 and 2001 and a renovation completed in 2018-2019. The elementary school was built in 2003.

"For the last two years, our elementary enrollment has trended upward," he said. "Especially in the lowest two grade levels."

Another reason to look into land acquisition is that education continues to become more specialized toward small group and individual instruction, which would require more classroom space and work areas, Meyer added.

Board member Ted Oldiges said after looking at class numbers, it appears enrollment numbers will continue to trend upward.

"It's better to get ahead of it then wait for it to be a problem," Oldiges said.

In other business, school officials bid treasurer Laura Klosterman farewell. She will retire Dec. 31 after serving the district for 30 years.

Meyer thanked her for her years of service.

"Those of us who work closely with you day-to-day know what you think of kids and how much you value education. As a treasurer, that is a key thing," Meyer said.

She will be succeeded by assistant treasurer Gina Selby.
