MARIA STEIN - A new three-day fine art show called Artistry At Harvest Barn will make its debut this weekend in a historic 1873 dairy barn transformed into an elegant event venue.
It replaces the renowned Artistry Under the Dome, a gathering of highly talented Mercer County artists and their works that was held for eight years at St. Charles but due to circumstances could no longer take place there, said Jennifer Overholser, a Greenville oil painter whose works will be on display.
About 30 mostly local artists have been secured and the public can expect to find the same high quality, original artwork in a variety of mediums and styles and live classical piano music, according to Overholser.
The show kicks off tonight with an artist reception from 6:30-9 p.m. at The Harvest Barn at 6915 Olding Road, Marin Stein.
"The Artistry Under the Dome was no longer able to take place due to some changes that took place over at St. Charles, and there was just a group of passionate artists who didn't want to see such a big event go to the wayside," Overholser told the newspaper.
A newly formed committee was able to nail down The Harvest Barn as a venue for the show. Overholser believes it will be a refreshing change of pace for art collectors and enthusiasts.
"We're actually very fortunate that the location is just a mile, if that, maybe, from St. Charles. It's just down the road, so that should be a nice continuation for folks," she said. "I think it will kind of elevate the atmosphere of the event a little bit."
The Harvest Barn, Overholser said, is a recently remodeled, beautiful rustic venue.
"I think the ambience of it is going to be really nice just for folks to come out and enjoy the afternoon or an evening of talking with the artists and taking in the great artwork," she added.
Not looking to reinvent the pottery wheel, the committee sought assistance from those who had participated in Artistry Under the Dome over the years.
"We've reached out to all the previously participating artists and kind of gave them the backstory of why we were transitioning, so they've been invited," Overholser said. "A couple of artists that have signed up to participate this year were actually on the committee previously so they were very instrumental in helping us kind of with the work plan."
They also harnessed the power of social media by assuming and renaming Artistry Under the Dome's Facebook page.
"We didn't have to organically restart the following, and I think that's probably one of the most successful tools that we're going to be able to pull to draw the same crowd," Overholser said.
Artists will be on hand at the show to meet with attendees and discuss their art. Light refreshments will be available.
"Collecting art is a great way to support small business owners, find one-of-a-kind gifts and add joy to your home. All sales will directly support the artists themselves," a news release reads.
Hours are 6:30-9 p.m tonight, 2-9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Admission is a suggested $1 donation and free for children 12 and under.
Adam Stall, a Coldwater musician, will play tonight at the event and Brian Rutter, a St. Marys piano instructor and musical director of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, on Saturday evening.
