Betty Hemmelgarn
Betty Lou Hemmelgarn, age 83 of Burkettsville, passed peacefully on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at Mercer County Community Hospital in Coldwater.
Betty was born on January 19, 1941, in Sharpsburg, to the late William J. & Olivia A. (Schoen) Miller. She married her husband, Robert A. Hemmelgarn on October 1, 1960. Bob and Betty were married for over 63 years, until his passing in January of this year.
Betty is survived by five of their children: David & Julie Hemmelgarn of Spencerville; Deborah & Jack Rutschilling of Coldwater; Dwayne & Ann Hemmelgarn of Coldwater; Douglas & Shelly Hemmelgarn of Burkettsville; and Daniel & Jesica Hemmelgarn of Burkettsville. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren: Jason, Josh, Megan, Taylor, Jeff, Andy, Nikki, Kristin, Nathan, Collin, Olivia, Lauren, Lydia, Abby, Sara, and Luke, and 18 great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings and in-laws include Arleen Miller of Portland, Ind.; Gerald & Helen Miller of Decatur, Ind.; Imogene Wilder of Decatur, Ind.; Ann Miller of Fort Wayne; Thomas Miller of Bryan, Ohio; Donald & Mary Miller of St. Henry; Marcia Miller of Coldwater; Anna Lee & Ralph Dahlinghaus of Burkettsville; Philip & Dana Hemmelgarn of Bradford; Dennis Hemmelgarn of Burkettsville; James & Joyce Hemmelgarn of Russia; Susan & Randy Luttmer of St. Henry; and Howard & Jeannette Osterholt of St. Henry.
In addition to her parents and husband, Betty is preceded in death by a son, Donald Hemmelgarn; a grandson Eric Rutschilling; her father & mother-in-law Henry & Martha Hemmelgarn; as well as siblings and in-laws: Gerald Miller, Richard & Viola Miller, Mary Ann Miller, James Wilder, James Miller, Mark Miller, Betty Osterholt, and Kathy Hemmelgarn.
Betty was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Burkettsville. She was active in maintaining the appearance of Main Street in Burkettsville. Betty enjoyed baking, was a very giving person, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 10, 2024, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Burkettsville. Burial in St. Bernard Cemetery will follow the funeral Mass.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, and from 9-10 a.m. on Monday, at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home in St. Henry.
