Huge structure fire deemed total loss

Firefighters responded to reports of an old timber frame barn completely engulfed in flames at 2185 U.S. Route 33, west of Rockford, Friday morning. Rockford Fire Department Assistant Chief Jordan Belna said no one was injured in the fire, which took crews 30 minutes to extinguish. A passerby spotted the barn on fire and called 911 at 10:44 a.m. Belna said the passerby tried to alert the homeowners, but no one was home. Belna said the barn, which was insured, housed old vehicles and other storage. No foul play is suspected. Belna said one of the main concerns was salvaging a fifth-wheel camper, which suffered moderate heat damage but remained intact otherwise. The names of the homeowners and the passerby were unavailable. Rockford, Willshire, Ohio City, Chattanooga and Wren fire departments all responded to the scene. There were seven tankers and five other fire engines at the scene.
