The Celina girls wrestling team hosted its first-ever home meet, taking on cross-lake rival St. Marys in a dual at the Celina High School gymnasium on Tuesday night.
The two teams battled throughout with the Bulldogs taking advantage of the Roughriders voiding several weight classes to claim a 45-36 victory.
In the opening match at 120 pounds, Celina's Jaidyn Regedanz trailed Isabella Hertenstein 7-2 after the first period, but took control in the second period to score a pinfall at 2:45. St. Marys quickly countered with a pinfall win of its own as Ava Price pinned Khilynn Mullett in 44 seconds at 125 pounds, followed by Roughrider 130-pounder Danielle Hoskins pinning Melanie Buschor in 3:51 to give the Roughriders a 12-6 lead.
Celina's Larissa Jackson quickly tied the match at 12-all with a pin on Taylor Wallace at 135 pounds. The 140-pound bout was the only one to go the full six minutes as Celina's Ashton Lehman recorded a 14-7 decision over Kairi Williams to give the Bulldogs a 15-12 lead. Mahalie Elking quickly pushed the lead to 21-12 by pinning Kailey Smith in the 145-pound bout in 3:31. At 155, Addie Wycuff got St. Marys back to within three with a pin on Stalla Standiford in 2:51, then the Roughriders took the lead at 24-18 when St. Marys recorded the win when Celina voided out at 170. At 190, St. Marys' Sophie Ellis pinned Katherine Goldsberry in 2:49 to give the Roughriders a 30-21 lead.
Celina quickly bounced back as St. Marys voided out at 235 and 100 pounds, then Celina decided to void out at 105 and move Ava Kelley, the top-ranked 100-pounder in the Lima Area Wrestling Association's rankings, to face Iliana Tlahuel, ranked fourth at 110. Despite giving up weight, Kelley scored the early takedown and scored four near-fall points to score the pin just before the buzzer sounded to make it 39-36 Celina, clinching the match as St. Marys voided out at 115 pounds.
The Celina girls will compete this weekend at the Teays Valley Invitational.
