Area cross country runners compete at Lions Invitational

Coldwater hosted the final tuneup before conference and postseason cross country meets as the annual Lions Invitational took place on Saturday, bringing in over 20 teams from around the area.

The Versailles boys set themselves up as the top team heading into the Midwest Athletic Conference meet, which will be on the same Coldwater course this Saturday, by winning with 46 points. Bryan was a distant second with 73 with Crestview third with 92.

St. Henry was the highest local finisher, placing sixth with 209 points, 21 points ahead of seventh-place Marion Local (230). Minster was 10th with 268 points. Fort Recovery was 17th with 481 with Parkway 18th with 520 and host Coldwater 19th with 552.

The Versailles tandem of Jackson Spitzer and Tony Moorman were at the front of the pack in the 5,000-meter race. Spitzer won in 15:21.66, breaking the meet and course record held by Versailles grad and University of Oregon standout Sam Prakel of 15:34.05 set in 2013. Moorman was second at 15:45.22. Liberty Center's Mason Like was third with Columbus Grove's Caiden Quillante and Crestview's Derek Young rounding out the top five.

Marion Local's Dalton Pohlmann was the top local finisher in 11th. St. Henry's Michael Rindler was 17th with Minster's Colin Cedarleaf taking 19th.

Fort Recovery was led by Alex Roessner's 33rd-place finish. Parkway's Isaac Menchhofer was 77th. Coldwater's Ethan Schmitmeyer finished 118th.

The Liberty Center girls edged Versailles 83-96 to capture the girls team title. Coldwater used a sixth-runner tiebreaker 77-99 with Van Wert to take third after both teams scored 139. Columbus Grove was fifth.

Parkway was eighth with 255 points. Marion Local was 13th with 345 with Minster, competing with its younger runners, taking 14th with 364.St. Henry was 15th with 365 points with Fort Recovery 18th with 447.

Bryan's Nicolette Stickney won the race in 19:14.04. Colbie Strayer of Liberty Center was runner-up at 19:33.94 with Shawnee's Jenna Stump, Delphos St. John's Cady Donaldson and Columbus Grove's Sarah Kamphaus rounding out the top five.

Coldwater's Abby Alig finished ninth with older sister Audrey Alig taking 11th. Marion Local's Maria Dirksen was 16th and Fort Recovery's Riley Heitkamp finished 20th.

Parkway's Taylor Muhlenkamp and Jordyn Schaefer finished 25th and 26th. St. Henry was led by Quinn Lefeld's 31st-place finish. Madison Eilerman finished 48th for Minster.

While the MAC meet will be at Coldwater, the Western Buckeye League meet will be at Van Wert at the course near Ohio Health Hospital on the Saturday. The high school races for both the MAC and WBL will take place at 9 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. with the junior high races taking place at 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Ed Leas Fall Classic

Celina traveled to Fort St. Clair Park in Eaton to tune up for Saturday's WBL meet.

The Celina girls won the Purple Division title with 32 points, edging Beavercreek 32-47.

Jennalee Dameron won the race with a time of 18:43.9, just over 35 seconds ahead of teammate Elle Miesse in second place. Janelle Dameron was fifth with Claire Huwer 10th and Sophie Gudorf placing 14th.

The Bulldog boys finished second behind Beavercreek with Celina scoring 72 points.

Colin Buening finished third for Celina. Caleb Lehman was sixth with Kaleb Dameron taking 12th.

Anna Rocket Invitational

New Bremen and New Knoxville competed at Anna.

The New Bremen girls finished sixth with New Knoxville competing individually. Upper Arlington won the meet with 21 points.

Riley Suchland led the Cardinals with a 17th-place finish with Kara Suchland taking 32nd. New Knoxville's Ariyah Pfenning placed 36th.

In the boys race, New Bremen finished eighth with 195 points with New Knoxville 14th with 405 points. Bellefontaine won the event with 70 points.

Caleb Wittenbrink led the Cardinals with a 24th-place finish with Simon Shroyer 34th. Ty Koenig led New Knoxville with a 55th-place finish.

GIRLS TENNIS

Division II Sectional

Celina's Isabelle Thobe finished runner-up at the University of Northwestern Ohio to advance to this week's district tournament.

Thobe, the second seed entering the tournament, defeated Shawnee's Riya Naroor 6-3, 6-2 to face Ottawa-Glandorf's Maggie Schmiedebusch in a rematch from last week's WBL first singles championship. Schmiedebusch defeated Bluffton's Hannah Nieman 6-1, 6-1 in the other semifinal.

Schmiedebusch was victorious for the second straight Saturday, defeating Thobe 6-3, 6-1.

In the third-fourth place match to decide seeding for district, Naroor defeated Nieman 6-4, 6-1.

In the doubles tournament, Lima Central Catholic's Alexa Heffner and Alana Heffner defeated Shawnee's Brailynn Murphy and Alivia Mack 6-1, 6-0 to win the sectional title. Bath's Allyson Harnishfeger and Briley Kaple defeated Elida's Emma Stauffer and Mya Long 6-4, 6-3 in the third-place match.

The district tournament will take place at Port Clinton on Wednesday with championship matches taking place Saturday.

BOYS SOCCER

Celina 2, Bluffton 1

The Bulldogs extended their unbeaten streak to eight matches (8-0-1) in beating the Pirates at the soccer stadium.

Bridon Jeffries and Nelson Chapman scored for the goals for Celina (9-3-3).

Celina hosts Lincolnview in a varsity-only match on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

New Knoxville 5, Defiance 0

The Rangers moved to .500 at 7-7-1 in shutting out the Bulldogs in New Knoxville.

Favian Caiola recorded his second straight hat trick and added two assists. Joel Holland and Parker Jones each had a goal. Ty Schroeder and Cooper Jones each added an assist.

VOLLEYBALL

Fort Loramie 3, Marion Local 0

The Flyers traveled to Shelby County, where the defending Division VII state champion Redskins picked up the 25-22, 25-22, 25-23 win over Marion, which drops to 12-8 on the season.

No statistics were submitted.

Fort Recovery 3, Ansonia 0

The Indians picked up the win over the Tigers.

Kenna Dues and Brynn Willman led Fort Recovery with seven kills each. Kayden Ranly contributed 29 assists, while Bridget Homan had five digs.

The Indians travel to Mississinawa Valley tonight.
