Celina boys, St. Marys girls win dual matches

ST. MARYS - Celina improved to 2-1 in Western Buckeye League dual matches in winning the Grand Lake Mat Battle over St. Marys 44-24 on Thursday night at Grand Lake Health System Court.

"We knew St. Marys was going to wrestle us tough. They're short on numbers this year," said Celina coach James Miracle. "But there's a couple of matches that could have gone either way and a couple we'd like to re-wrestle."

Celina jumped out to an early 21-0 lead. Starting at 144 pounds, Aaren King faced off against Dylan Fink, going up 6-1 early en route to a 12-2 major decision to make it 4-0 early. Noah Russel followed with a pin in the third period over Colton Luedeke at 150 pounds. At 157, Luke Maxwell battled Zach Myers for six full minutes, with Maxwell scoring a reversal late in the third period to get the 11-9 decision.

Matt Eicher made it 16-0 for Celina with an 11-9 decision over Noah Bruce at 165. After the Bulldogs were penalized a team point for a violation, Wes Greber pinned Tyler Holsinger in 1:03 to make it 21-0 after 175 pounds.

St. Marys snapped the skid at 190 when Miguel Valdez pinned Brenner Hinkle. Zaden Williams then decisioned Landen Fischer 8-1. Celina's Cash Patrick wrapped up the heavyweight matches with a 19-4 technical fall over Matt Murray at 285 pounds to extend Celina's lead to 26-9 at the turn.

Isaac Helmer made it 32-9 Celina with a first-period pin of Logan Neargarder at 106 pounds. Celina voided out at 113, but Leland Dross pinned Chace Luedeke in the second period to make score 38-15. Lon Melendrez recorded the Bulldogs final points of the night at 126 with a first-period pin on Wes Klosterman. Jax VanGundy pinned Ross Helmer at 132, then Evan Klosterman decisioned Mason Homan 7-5 to wrap up the night.

The St. Marys girls continued their strong start to the season in beating an understaffed Celina squad 66-18. The Bulldogs voided out on six weight classes with the Roughriders voiding at 100 pounds.

Amelia Serio scored a pin on Arianna Bernholt at 105 pounds to give St. Marys a 12-0 lead out of the gate. Celina's Ava Kelley got six points back with a pin on Iliana Tlahuel at 110 pounds. After Celina voided at 115, Zerrah Sharpe gave St. Marys another pinfall win at 120 over Kaydence Hathaway. After a void at 125, Isabella Hertenstein added another pinfall win for the Roughriders at 130 over Larissa Jackson. Abbie Meyer scored a pin over Celina's Lieah Hedge at 135. After a void at 140, Celina's Khilynn Mullett pinned Addie Wycuff at 145. St. Marys' Reelyn Montague scored the pin in the final contested bout of the night at 155 in pinning Katherine Goldsberry.

Celina's boys travel to Bexley for the Bexley Duals on Saturday while the girls will be at the Madison Invitational. St. Marys' boys will be at the Versailles Invitational on Saturday while the girls will be at the Washington Invitational.
